Portable hydraulic power for modern wind maintenance

As wind turbines become larger and installations more complex, maintenance teams need equipment that can be moved quickly between turbines, transported vertically and operated reliably in confined environments.

Angie Wallace, Product Line Director at Enerpac Tool Group, says feedback from technicians helped shape the LU-Series hydraulic pump, which was developed for smaller, intermittent tasks where larger continuous-duty equipment can be unnecessarily difficult to transport and deploy.

Designed around the technician

Wind technicians regularly carry out routine torque checks, maintenance and servicing across multiple turbines. According to Wallace, the main pressures facing these teams are mobility, time and the working environment.

Enerpac therefore based the LU-Series around three principles:

  • Portability
  • Optimised flow
  • Serviceability

Technician feedback influenced practical features including multiple carry points, ergonomic handling, detachable power cords and an upward-facing analogue gauge.

The pump is designed for use around large bolted wind components, reflecting the confined environments and frequent equipment movement that influenced its design.

Reliability in demanding conditions

For Wallace, reliable hydraulic power means delivering consistent, repeatable torque performance without unexpected shutdowns, particularly when turbine access is restricted.

Enerpac says the system underwent endurance and environmental testing covering high-temperature operation, mechanical impact resistance and pressure under sustained loads. Continuous temperature monitoring and automatic shutdown functions are intended to protect components during extended use.

The pump also incorporates features designed around everyday field requirements, including:

  • A detachable pendant with onboard storage
  • Accessible components for inspection and replacement
  • A protective front shield and structural roll cage
  • Cord management and clearly marked electrical access points
  • An upward-angled gauge for easier pressure readings

The gauge and pendant arrangement are both intended to make operation easier without requiring technicians to reposition the equipment.

Filling a gap in maintenance equipment

Wallace argues that the most significant change is combining a lightweight design with hydraulic performance intended specifically for intermittent tasks.

Rather than using larger pumps designed for continuous operations, technicians can use equipment matched more closely to smaller maintenance jobs. Enerpac says this can reduce setup time and unnecessary handling while allowing crews to move more easily between turbines.

The LU-Series sits alongside the company’s larger pumps rather than replacing them. The intention is to provide different hydraulic options according to the demands of each task.

Responding to the next phase of wind

Enerpac expects turbine growth and more complex offshore installations to increase demand for portable, application-specific equipment.

Wallace identifies three wider trends influencing future development: electrification and energy security, the industrialisation of offshore and floating wind and greater system integration and standardisation.

The company is responding to the third area by incorporating data collection into tools, developing standardised battery platforms and aligning software across different tool systems.

However, Wallace emphasises that product development remains closely connected to field experience. Enerpac works with technicians, distributors and end users to establish requirements, conduct early field trials and gather feedback before launch.

As wind maintenance becomes more demanding, the argument is that hydraulic equipment should reflect how technicians actually work rather than simply delivering higher specifications. Mobility, ease of use, serviceability and dependable performance can all influence how much work crews complete within restricted maintenance windows.

For Enerpac, supporting the next phase of wind therefore means developing tools around both the technical task and the people carrying it out.
